Oceanic Mesoscale Cyclones Cluster Surface Lagrangian Material

چکیده

An asymmetry in the clustering of oceanic surface material has been observed at submesoscales. Energetic and ephemeral submesoscale cyclonic fronts are associated with convergence zones, hence cluster material. Their anticyclonic counterparts do not feature such an effect. Yet, mesoscale, literature contradictory about asymmetry. Here, we combine drifter trajectories altimetry-derived mesoscale eddy database North Atlantic to show that cyclones contain 24% more drifters than anticyclones. A numerical Lagrangian experiment using a mesoscale-resolving model quantitatively reproduces observational results. It reveals particles preferentially regions, both eddies. The further suggests ageostrophic concentrate few days before formation detection.

Mesoscale Processes in Tropical Cyclones

I have four long-term goals. My first goal is to finalize the large body of work already carried out by the PI on the predictability of tropical cyclone (TC) forecast tracks out to 72 hours ahead. My second goal is to apply similar, as well as new, ideas to the predictability of forecast intensity out to 72 hours ahead. My third goal is to carry out observing system simulation experiments (OSSE...

Three-dimensional reconstruction of oceanic mesoscale currents from surface information

[1] The ability to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) dynamics of the ocean by an effective version of Surface Quasi-Geostrophy (eSQG) is examined. Using the fact that surface density plays an analogous role as interior potential vorticity (PV), the eSQG method consists in inverting the QG PV generated by sea-surface density only. We also make the extra assumption that sea-surface temperatu...

The Dynamics of Extratropical Oceanic Cyclones

A temperature structure appropriate for maritime areas is employed to find exact solutions to the non-linear quasi-geostrophic omega and vorticity equations, using a procedure similar to that used in a quasigeostrophic model by Sanders (1971). Results are qualitatively similar to those found in the latter model, and thus, are consistent with the traditional baroclinic stability theory. The prin...

Oceanic mass transport by mesoscale eddies.

Oceanic transports of heat, salt, fresh water, dissolved CO2, and other tracers regulate global climate change and the distribution of natural marine resources. The time-mean ocean circulation transports fluid as a conveyor belt, but fluid parcels can also be trapped and transported discretely by migrating mesoscale eddies. By combining available satellite altimetry and Argo profiling float dat...

Eulerian And Lagrangian Predictability Of Oceanic Flows

Our work has a number of objectives: • To determine the predictability time scales of the meandering of oceanic fronts • To determine the ways in which predictability in such a flow is lost, the physical processes responsible, and the sites of most rapid error growth • To develop simple, efficient data assimilation schemes that can be used to forecast the behavior of such fronts • To develop a ...
